Onstwedde is a location about 30 kilometers south east of Groningen. It is more than 1100 years old. It was called Uneswido at that time, and can be found in old documents. It is well known for its Juffertoren, a tower, and the church to which it is connected. The Juffertoren is about 700 years old, and was built by one of three sisters,who after a life of luxury and pleasure wanted to do something for her salvation. The church is about 500 years old. It is dedicated to St. Nicholas. It contains a very specuial font of Bentheimer sandstone. After the reformation it was removed from the church, being a symbol of Roman Catholicism. It was used for feeding cattle. But in 1989 it was replaced in the church.
