For kilometers around, the Hilversum broadcasting tower is visible, marking the town as the center of Dutch electronic media. Hilversum is an odd mix of small town Netherlands and international influence. The town center consists of a bland euromodern mall, with all the typical Dutch stores, as well as the chestnut tree lined Groest (a five min walk straight out from the Central train station), which is home to a number of pleasant cafes and pubs, with outdoor seating when the weather is good.

One of the major tourist attractions are, of course, the Dudok buildings. There are quite a number of them, amongst which is the town house, a number of schools and buildings near cemeteries. His modern cubist style, which was inspired Frank Lloyd Wright, makes Hilversum a very interesting find for those who take an interest in architecture and impressive buildings.

The real treat in Hilversum is the Goois Natuurreservaat a nature preserve on the northern and southern ends of town. The southern reserve in particular covers a large (by Dutch standards) area of forest, and of heatherfields, which in summer are filled with purple flowers. Crossed by bike and walking paths, the Naturreservaat is an unusually dry and (comparatively) hilly area, and makes for a amazing afternoons outing.
