The municipality of Bihac is situated in the north west part of B&H. Its area is 689 square km. From B&H side, it borders on the municipalities of Cazin, Bosanska Krupa, Bosanski Petrovac and Drvar, and from Croatian side, on Donji Lapac, Korenica and Slunj. The relief of the municipality of Bihac is diverse. It is mainly made up of fields, hills and middle size mountains. Average sea level is 231 m. A large part of the municipality of Bihac is rich in waters: springs, streams and rivers. Total length of the Una River watercourse in the area of the municipality is 80 km. The area of Bihac has a moderate mountainous type of climate which is diverse because of the influence of air masses from neighbouring and distant areas. Summers are hot and dry, and winters are cold with a high rainfall. Average annual rainfall is 1,245 mm and average monthly temperature is 10,8 C mean temperature in January is 0,4 C and average temperature in July is 21 C. During the calendar year there are 80 days with sub zero temperatures. Frost appears October through April and snow November to April. Frost is a characteristic of Bihac field, especially in Gorjevac and Dubovsko. Nort western and south eastern winds prevail gale and south winds. Pedological blanket is diverse. Flora is rech and stratified. All kinds of animals can be found in the area of the municipality of Bihac. As regards flora and fauna, it is one of the richest areas in B&H. According to geological structure, there is a promising and significant basis for the research and exploitation of mineral resources. Up till now, significant deposits of gypsum, bihacit stone (stone found in Bihac) and other mineral resources were found, such as dolomite, various kinds of limestone, quartz sand, thermal springs, mineral springs and drinking water springs. The economic development achieved before the aggression against the Una Sana canton was of a high level. Several big industrial capacities were formed in textile, metal, wood and timber, chemical and agricultural industry. Generally speaking, the economy of the Bihac municipality had long term growth impulses.

During the aggression against our country a major part of industrial capacities was destroyed and production stopped. Technological lagging behind developed country is noticeable and it will take time to reach profitable level of production. The year 1977 marked the beginning of the repair of the damage, restoration of the preserved capacities and the preparations for the realisation of new products based on own resources and new technologies. Besides the need to put emphasis on transformation of ownership, the following period should be used for starting marketoriented production. It has already been said that the area of Bihac, which has natural resources, can be the basis for development of the existing as well as new production in the field of exploitation and processing of mineral resources, primary agricultural production, food industry, forestry, wood and timber industry. Besides, natural beauty, thermal and mineral water springs, forest areas and richness in rivers make it suitable for the development of tourism. The guidelines for the development of the municipality of Bihac are defined in the recently approved Strategy for the Development of the Una Sana Canton. They refer to the need for construction and modernisation of entire infrastructure. One of the advantages is the fact that many state owned companies have already worked out their development plans. The area of Bihac has ideal conditions for the development of tourism, but up till now they havent been sufficiently used. Building of roads, the vicinity of the Plitvice Lakes and Dalmatia demand better valorisation of the natural beauty of this area. Lets mention the natural beauty of the Una River with localities in RipaE, Kulen Vakuf, Kostela, Kru1nica, then high mountains Plje1evica and GrmeE, thermal springs in Gata Ilidaa... This indicates that there are possibilities for multiple increase of tourist capacities and faster development of catering in this area. Development programmes of the municipality of Bihac have not left out health services, education and other social activities. Bihac has become a university centre. Activities to strengthen business banks, custom houses, freight forwarding and designing firms. The development of physical education facilities and organisations for cultural entertaining life are not neglected, and neither are public service and governmental facilities.
